Sophomore running back series

Back at it again with the running backs!

Following my profile of all 32 NFL backfields, I decided to go more in-depth on some running backs entering their second year in the league. Last year's crop of rookie runners was a deep one, and many had great success in both real life and fantasy football. Two guys who were rookies last year are in the conversation as first-round fantasy picks this season: Todd Gurley and David Johnson. It's up for debate as to which back you'd prefer to draft first, and both guys have their pros and cons. But there are a ton of other second-year RBs who deserved a closer look.

Here's the full list of Year 2 running backs that I looked at in this two-part series on

  • Todd Gurley (STL)
  • David Johnson (ARI)
  • Thomas Rawls (SEA)
  • Jay Ajayi (MIA)
  • Matt Jones (WAS)
  • Duke Johnson (CLE)
  • Jeremy Langford (CHI)
  • Melvin Gordon (SD)
  • Karlos Williams (BUF)
  • Ameer Abdullah (DET)
  • T.J. Yeldon (JAX)
  • Tevin Coleman (ATL)
  • Javorius Allen (BAL)
  • David Cobb (TEN)
  • Cameron Artis-Payne (CAR)

That is quite the list. I split this series into two parts: Breakout candidates and Taking the next step. The line between the two parts is drawn between Langford and Gordon, and yes there is quite a drop-off in fantasy potential about half-way through part 2, but it never hurts to be a little bit more knowledgable about some under-the-radar players just in case.
